The vehicle for learning changes. Golf, cheer, musicals, painting, piano. But the reason stays the same. Their brains are sponges, and they're learning what it's like to be bad at something, then a little better, and maybe one day an expert.

And right now they're on the keyboard picking out melodies, asking when they get to start real lessons. That's not a phase to wait out; it’s a cue to begin.

Maybe you took lessons growing up and can still find middle C. Maybe you always wished you had. Either way, you know the value of your child learning an instrument.

Playing piano is complicated, which is the point.

Your child gets to try something, struggle, practice, and come out of their lesson with a piece they can't wait to play for you. Piano is the subject. Learning to work at something is the lesson.

Your child will still have this at thirty. At sixty. Piano will still be there, something to go to when they need it, that belongs entirely to them.
